Wynonna Earp Season 1 Tv Review

WARNING: There are some spoilers for season 1 in this review, I tried to keep all spoilers very minimal, so read at your own risk.

This is my first ever tv show review and I decided to review one of my favourite tv shows first season, Wynonna Earp. This show is about a girl named Wynonna who has a well-known family name because of her great great grandfather, Wyatt Earp. But having a historical history is not the only thing Wynonna’s family has. The Earp’s are a part of a long line of people who kill demons, also known as revenants, that are in Purgatory, their home town. One Earp becomes the heir when they turn 27 and they have the power to use a special gun, Peacemaker, that can send the demons or revenants, back to hell. Wynonna comes back to town after leaving when she was younger to get away and have a normal life. She comes back because she hears of her uncle’s passing. Wynonna comes back right on her 27th birthday and the revenants in Purgatory have been waiting for her. Wynonna’s baby sister, Waverly, has been in Purgatory her whole life. Both Earp sisters with some help from Dolls, an agent form a secret organization that know about the supernatural things going on in the world; and Doc Holliday, a famous gunslinger. They all fight the revenants in Purgatory and any other supernatural creatures that threaten their town.

The cast is really great, they all seem very close and are good friends with each other and things like that transfer over to the show and to their acting. Personally for me things like that set shows like this a part from other shows. When I can really see the chemistry between the characters because the actors have that same chemistry. The show has a great, strong female lead played by the lovely and talented Melanie Scrofano, and I always love to see strong female leads on tv shows because there isn’t a lot of them. The show is funny and has lots of action in it; it’s a new kind of demon story and mythology that I have never seen before. It’s mysterious and it has an interesting backstory with the Earp family, the town, and the Earp curse. I really like the bond between Wynonna and Waverly, they would both do anything for each other. Wynonna wants to protect Waverly and give her the best life she could possibly have and Waverly just wants to help her big sisters and stop the curse.

Another thing that I really like about Wynonna Earp is that every episode is filled with action and new and interesting things. There isn’t any episode that falls short from the last. I really like how head strong Wynonna is and her attitude of not letting anyone step on her. Some people may see that as a bad thing but to me that is an amazing quality to have in either female, male, or anyone else.

Now for some of my favourite episodes in the first season of Wynonna Earp. This was really hard for me to choose my favourites because I really enjoy all of the episodes in the season. However, I did manage to narrow it down to 8 episodes…out of 13. The first one on my list is the very first episode of the season 1.01 “Purgatory”. This is the pilot, the episode that started the whole show. It is thrilling and really pulls you into the story. The episode gives a great introduction to all of the characters, it shows the backstory into the Earp family and the Earp curse. It has some supernatural elements in it with the revenants and the weird things going on around town. Not only did the episode have some supernatural elements in it, but it is also funny with some witty lines and jokes being made throughout it.

The next episode on my list of favourites is episode 1.02 “Keep The Home Fires Burning”. I enjoyed watching this one a lot because it started to show more of Wynonna working with Dolls and Black Badge to take down all the revenants and monsters in Purgatory. In this episode we meet Nicole Haught, a new police officer to Purgatory and also the beginning of the “Wayhaught” romance between Waverly and Nicole. This episode gives a more in depth look into the revenants in town and “The Seven”; who are the seven revenants that attacked the Earp sisters home when they were kids, killing both their father and their older sister Willa. In the previous episode Wynonna killed one of the seven whey the revenants attacked Gus, their aunt, and took Waverly. Then in this episode Wynonna killed two more with the help of her baby sister, Waverly. Now they’re one step closer to avenging their family and stopping the Earp Curse. Another thing I liked about this episode was Wynonna letting Waverly join her and Dolls to find and kill all the revenants.

The third episode on my list of favourites is 1.04 “The Blade”. I thought this episode was good because it was kind of like a monster of the week (to any Supernatural fans reading this review); very focused on the storyline of the revenant and what it does to people. He, the revenant, makes people find forgiveness from people for something bad that they’ve done and if they don’t receive forgiveness from whoever, the revenant kills them. Before this revenant was a demon he was a priest, so he knows all about people’s sins and bad things that they have done. With this revenant and what he goes after, it revealed some interesting revelation about Waverly and what she thinks. But I won’t say because I want to keep this as spoiler-free as possible while still being able to talk about things. Another thing about the revenant in this episode is that he is a part of “The Seven”. Of course, Wynonna kills him, so they can avenge their family and stop the Earp Curse. Something that l liked about this episode was that we got a look into both Doll’s history and Doc’s history. Learning about Wyatt leaving and Doc being sick and some mysterious things in Dolls’ past life.

The fourth episode on my list of favourites is episode 1.06 “Constant Cravings”. I liked watching this episode because it was a different kind of episode to find and kill the revenant. It was more of a police investigation, finding clues, analyzing them and then tracking the person down. And that was really interesting to me and fun to watch. Another thing I really enjoyed about this episode was Waverly finally breaking up with Champ, standing up for herself, and not hiding show she really is. I thought that was very big thing of Waverly to do and really developed the character. In this episode there was more than one revenant to kill, but only one of them was a part of “The Seven”. The revenants were also kind of weird in this episode, more cannibalistic than others we’ve seen on the show before. And in this episode we get to learn Dolls’ secret, that there is more to him than meets the eye. I won’t say it officially in case people haven’t seen the episode.

The fifth episode on my list of favourites is episode 1.07 “Walkin’ After Midnight”. I enjoyed watching this episode a lot because we to see more of Nicole with Wynonna than we’ve seen in other episodes. Like the previous episode, we get to see Waverly stand up for herself and not hide who she is. Instead she was proud and embraced show she is, an Earp. Another thing I enjoyed about this episode was getting to learn more about the White Witch, who she is, what she wants. And the episode had a great suspenseful cliff-hanger that left me and maybe others watching, very anxious to see the next one.

The sixth episode on my list of favourites is episode 1.08 “Two-Faced Jack”. I really liked this episode because it showed a much more vulnerable side to Wynonna that we’ve never seen before. When she though she lost her legs being paralyzed from the waist down, it scared her. And this is a big testament to the great performance done by Melanie Scrofano. Another thing I liked about this episode was getting to see more of Nicole and Waverly’s relationship. I am all for the “Wayhaught” ship because I feel like they bring out the best in each other and Waverly finally has someone who accepts her and is good for her. In this episode, the last of The Seven was killed and Wynonna and Waverly finally got to avenge their family’s death.

The seventh episode on my list of favourites is episode 1.10 “She Wouldn’t Be Gone”. This episode was such a whirlwind of things. I thought that the way this episode ended, with Willa coming back, was very interesting and a very big surprise, for me at least. I enjoyed seeing Wynonna and Dolls’ relationship in this episode both working together and a bit more than that. Even if I think she’s fine on her own. I also liked seeing the new creatures besides just having revenants as the supernatural monsters on the show. It added something new, a bit more flare to what was already there.

And finally, the last episode on my list of favourites is episode 1.13 “I Walk The Line”. This was such an amazing finale for the season with lots of things happening it in. Willa turned out to be working with Bobo trying to break the revenants out of the Ghost River Triangle, which is what imprisons them in Purgatory. There was some “Wayhaught” moments and we got to see more of Wynonna and Waverly’s relationship. Another thing I really liked about this episode was Wynonna doing a very brave thing by killing her sister to stop her because it showed really great character development for Wynonna. The last thing I liked about this episode was the very edge of your seat cliff-hanger that set up the next season very nicely.

So, that is all of my favourite episodes and thoughts for season 1 of Wynonna Earp. I would highly, highly, highly recommend that you start watching the show. Especially if you love the show Supernatural or only kind of like supernatural shows. And even you don’t, still give it a try.
