Wynonna Earp and Supernatural Similarities

Ever since I first started to watch the tv show Wynonna Earp, I started to see a lot of similarities to my favourite show, Supernatural. Now besides the big difference of it being for starters an entirely different show. It technically only has one lead character, and it’s sisters instead of brothers. I noticed quite a few or should I say a bunch of similarities between the two shows, with a little help for some other ones. To start off, Dean Winchester and Wynonna Earp are very similar and the same goes for Sam Winchester and Waverly Earp. Dean and Wynonna dress with their might I say awesome leather jackets, have pretty close if not the same personalities with using one liners and being funny. While Sam and Waverly were more on the knowledge and research side of the personalities. But that’s to say that either siblings can do research or be funny. Sam and Waverly just wanted to go to school and have a normal life, they didn’t want to immerse themselves into what their family did. And Dean and Wynonna just wanted their younger siblings to be safe and live the life they want. From the time they were kids, Dean and Wynonna have been looking after their younger siblings, and they are still doing the same now.

Both Dean and Wynonna have nicknames for their younger siblings. Dean calls Sam “Sammy” many times, sometimes he calls him little brother. Wynonna calls Waverly “Waves” or she’ll call her “Baby Girl”. Both shows have a special gun that can kill monsters/demons. On Supernatural there is The Colt, that can kill almost every monster in creation besides 5 creatures. And on Wynonna Earp there is Peace Maker which is the only weapon that can kill and send the revenants or demons in Purgatory back to hell. Both the Winchester’s and the Earp’s parents are dead or gone in the first season, although the mothers on both shows do come back for a little bit; and then the main focus is on the two brothers and the two sisters. Also, let’s not forget about the other sibling beside the main duo. And both died on the two shows, technically each of them by one of their siblings (I say technically because Sam didn’t entirely kill Adam). On both shows the Winchester’s and the Earp’s fight demons and monsters. And in the first couple of seasons on both shows, they started with just demons being the main monster and then started to branch out to different monsters. Both shows started with just having demons and then brought in angels into the later seasons.

Getting into a bit more specific for this one, I noticed a scene parallel on both shows. In Supernatural season 2 episode 14 “Born Under A Bad Sign” and in Wynonna Earp Season 2 episode 4 “She Ain’t Right”, Dean and Wynonna hold up a gun to Sam and Waverly because a demon or demon like creature is possessing them. However both of them cannot and will not pull the trigger on their baby siblings, no matter what the circumstance is. This similarity isn’t quite the same but it goes on the same lines with each other. When Supernatural first started and Wynonna Earp first started both of their families was very focused on getting revenge. The Earp sisters wanted revenge for their father and their older sister Willa, and the Winchester brothers wanted revenge for their mother. On both shows there are these secret organizations trying to kill supernatural creatures and rid the world of them. These organizations do things a little differently than the Earp’s and the Winchester’s though. Both of the sibling duos have said before that they feel like their curse, they feel like their family is cursed. Wynonna and Waverly’s family actually call it the Earp curse.

Sam and Waverly always had a feeling that they were different, that they didn’t belong. Sam with having demon blood in him and Waverly with being half-angel from her birth father. Straying a little bit away from direct parallels between the two siblings, they all have supernatural friends. There’s Cas, an angel, and Jack, half angel/half human which is a Nephilim, on Supernatural. And then there’s Dolls who is some type of dragon lizard thing and Doc who is technically supernatural with a ring that makes him live forever on Wynonna Earp. The last similarity I found between the two shows was that death is not permanent for the Winchester’s or the Earp’s. Sam and Dean have died countless times and Waverly and Wynonna have died once or twice, but all four of them are still kicking and fighting monsters.

Those are all of the similarities I could find between the two shows with some help from a couple of people. If you know me then you know that I adore both of these shows and would definitely recommend that you check them out and give them a try; either trying out Supernatural or Wynonna Earp or both.

Now I see so much more similaries! I know that Waverly want to travel and see world but I think that she isn't as much similar to Sam in this way. She want to get out of Prugathory but she want be this one who break the curse. I know hat Sam want too, but it was later and for different reasons. But I understand why you see them similar in this case :)
