Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again Movie Review

Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again is the sequel to the first Mamma Mia! movie released in 2008. This one is about Sophie living in the villa and remaking it into a hotel in honour of her mother, Donna. Throughout the movie, there are flashbacks to before Donna gave birth to Sophie, when she first met Sam, Harry, and Bill. Even though it took them 10 years to make the sequel to the movie, it was completely worth the wait. The movie was excellent; it had lots of new things and had some components that carried over from the first one. One of the things that I really liked about the movie was the huge cast of present, past, and new characters, like the grandmother and Fernando, and the past versions of everyone: Donna, Sam, Harry, Bill, Rosie, and Tanya.

Another thing that I liked about the second Mamma Mia! movie was the soundtrack. I loved the soundtrack from the first one and the second one had some new, fun songs to listen to but still had a few songs from the first movie. I also like how they had the credit song be “Super Trouper” with the whole cast in Dynamo costumes just like they did in the first Mamma Mia! movie with “Waterloo” as the credit song. I also liked how Sophie wanted to be

a dynamo when she was kid, and then got to sing with Rosie and Tanya playing a dynamo. I really liked the humour done throughout the movie, like when Bill started to get emotional about Donna and Rosie judging him for crying even though she was doing the same thing earlier. I liked the transitions between past and present time scenes, I thought they were timed very well. I also liked the way each of the actors played the younger versions of the characters, I thought they did a very nice job portraying them. Especially, Lilly James, she did an amazing job being young Donna, with the spunky personality and free spirit. I saw a lot of similarities between Lily and Meryl Streep.

Young and Old Donna

Some more things that I liked about the movie was the continuation of characters from the past to present scenes, like the fishermen who was in love and the ferry box office worker. I also appreciated how even though Donna is dead, she was still in flashback/ghost like kind of scenes.

It allowed Meryl Streep to still be in the movie, which I like. Although, I kind of wish there were more scenes with her in them, like maybe playing Donna with a kid version of Sophie. As well as, some more scenes with Sophie and her baby, there could have been some parallel like scenes of Donna with Sophie, and Sophie and Sky with their baby, Don. I also wish there were more scenes with Harry, Bill, and Sky. There was more scenes with them in the first movie, and in this one Bill and Harry came in late and Sky was away for a fair amount of it.

I really liked Cher playing the grandmother. It was a great role for her, she fit right in with everyone and they all looked like one big family. I also really liked the bond between Rosie and Tanya, both with the present and past versions. They are both always funny and work well together. Their voices are very in tune with each other’s when they sing and the actors seem to have very good chemistry with each other. Both of the characters are some of my favourite characters in the movies. I didn’t have any dislikes for the movie. I thought it was really good and entertaining, and that everyone on both the cast and crew did a really great job.

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is considering going to see Mamma Mia! Here Go Again. It’s fun, upbeat, intriguing, funny, and a family-friendly movie for anyone to watch.
